Spotlight on Community Rep

Abigail Rae is a vibrant and dedicated Community Representative at Rochester and Rutherford Hall. Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Social and Environmental Sustainability at the University of Canterbury, Abi is majoring in Environmental Policy Governance and Social Justice. This unique degree, offered only at the University of Canterbury drew Abi from Saint Mary’s College in Auckland to Christchurch. Abi’s passion for sustainability and love for the outdoors are the driving forces behind her academic and personal life.

A Role with Purpose: Community Representative

Collaborating with Mia and Olly, under the guidance of Principal Jo, Abi works closely with tutors and the Student Executive team to foster a vibrant and connected community. The support systems in place provide significant freedom, allowing Community Reps to pursue initiatives that excite them and resonate with the residents.

One of their key objectives is to help residents connect with nature and with each other, especially during stressful exam and assignment periods. This goal was beautifully exemplified during the Winter Wellness Month, which ran from May to April. Events included knitting sessions, Saturday morning walks to the Riccarton Market, pancake lunches hosted by the Red Frogs, board game nights, movie nights, Cuppa Club coffee outings, and a gardening revamp with a cameo from the iconic ice-cream truck, Mr. Whippy.

Recently, the hall hosted a visit from Canine Friends. Recognising that many residents miss their pets from home, Abi hopes this visit provided comfort and fostered further connections within the community. The event was a resounding success, with students enjoying the therapeutic presence of the dogs, highlighting the positive impact of such initiatives on mental health and community bonding.

Looking ahead, Abi is excited about organising more outdoor events, collaborating with the Sports Representatives to host sports games, laser tag, go-carting and introducing yoga and spin classes.

Motivation and Vision

Abi’s motivation for taking on the role of Community Representative is deeply intertwined with her academic pursuits. She views this role as a practical extension of her degree, allowing her to apply theoretical knowledge in real-life scenarios. The collaborative approach, abundant support, and freedom to innovate have made her experience immensely rewarding. The Hall’s support in funding and bringing their visions to life has been a significant factor in the success of various initiatives.

Dodd Garden: A Community Gem

One standout project Abi has been involved with is the Dodd Garden and the tree-planting initiative. Partnering with Kaitlyn, an alumni passionate about creating the Dodd Garden, Abi hosted an event where residents got involved in gardening, planting feijoa and lemon trees. The overwhelming positive response to this event has encouraged further plans for the garden, including more planting sessions and community morning teas. Abi believes the Dodd Garden has helped residents recognise and utilise this beautiful community space more, inviting them to pick and enjoy fresh fruit.

Life in Dodd House

Living in Dodd House has been a pleasant surprise for Abi. The friendly, open community and lounge space for both relaxing and studying have made it a great place to live. Dodd House, and R&R Hall as a whole, fosters a sense of belonging and openness. Abi looks forward to flatting with friends from various houses in R&R next year.

A Cherished Community

Abi highlighted the community aspect of the Hall as her favourite thing about being a part of R&R. "It really does feel like home," she shares. The well-organised support system, the presence of tutors and Jo, and the plethora of opportunities contribute to this sense of home. Abi treasures the activities, sports, formal dinners, and casual conversations over supper. The sense of community and the friendships she has formed are invaluable to her.

Abi Rae’s dedication, enthusiasm, and genuine love for her community make her an exceptional Community Representative. Her efforts in connecting residents with nature and each other have enriched the R&R Hall experience, making it a truly special place for all who live there.
