Waiouru Military – The Territorial Force
After completing his first year of university and resident of Rochester and Rutherford Hall, Raniera Whiu embarked on seven weeks of basic training with the New Zealand Army Reserve (Territorial Force). Inspired by family members who have gone before him, he describes the opportunity as a ‘rewarding experience to learn how to serve my country and community’. The days were, “long and rigorous with physical training, discipline, and skill-building exercises”. The Territorial Force are trained in essential military skills, including weapon handling, first aid, fieldcraft, navigation, and teamwork. The intensive daily fitness regime is an integral part of routine with a purpose to build endurance and resilience.
Despite the early mornings and brutal demands, both physically and mentally, Raniera believes the skills and personal growth gained, outweigh the challenges.
One of the benefits of the Territorial Force is the flexibility of ongoing training, and although he has returned to university life, Raniera remains actively involved in military training. Recently, he was at Wigram Airforce Base further developing his skills and gaining hands-on experience in a military environment. Participants can choose when to train, allowing a schedule to fit military commitments around university and social lives. This flexibility enables Raniera to continue developing his skills, while balancing his academic focus. There is also a financial benefit associated, making it an appealing option for students seeking a meaningful part-time commitment and being compensated for their time in training.
The territorial journey stands as a testament to hard work, commitment, and the benefits of stepping outside your comfort zone. Whether in a military setting or a university classroom, Raniera Whiu continues to push himself to new heights, embodying both service and self-improvement in everything he does.
